In the pages of BFB, hooks would warn against the trickier duplicities of political correctness – specifically when deployed to silence, subvert and “mindf *ck” (hooks’ precise wording) the aesthetically marginalised into “the worst kind of mental terrorism”. ![]() Writing in the Village Voice in 1991, the infamous contrarian critic Armond White posited the notion that “a generation of new Black filmmakers badly needs a generation of film reviewers not enslaved to Hollywood orthodoxy… If there are filmmakers with the guts or inspiration to put a frame around their individual view of the world – it may require a compatible critic who has a cultural head start to accurately describe the effort” – the moment signifying “too crucial a period in American cultural history to be left to fools”. As the writer Andrea Stuart framed it, “by integrating the personal with cultural criticism”, hooks collapsed traditional boundaries between the academy, autobiography, film and feminist theory. Comanche boys became adept bareback riders by age six full Comanche braves were considered the best horsemen who ever rode. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.Īlthough readers may be more familiar with the tribal names Apache and Sioux, it was in fact the legendary fighting ability of the Comanches that determined just how and when the American West opened up. ![]() ![]() The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. ![]() Gwynne’s Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. For someone who’s familiar with Lovecraft, though, you get a little bit of excitement from recognizing characters or creatures from other stories. ![]() ![]() The bulk of the book is descriptions of places and races, but there’s not a whole lot going on, so it can get very boring. There are two battles/skirmishes, and Carter gets kidnapped twice and almost dies once, but there’s not a lot of real tension because the characters aren’t fleshed out enough to get invested in. It’s interesting to see how the Lovecraftian monsters go about their normal lives and see where they fit into the mythos, but this novella is almost boring enough to make you want to beat your head against the wall. Most of the book is Randolf Carter (the protagonist from “The Statement of Randolf Carter”) travelling across the dreamlands and talking with its various peoples and species. Even though it has the usual Lovecraftian horror suspects like Nyarlathotep, the night-gaunts, and the gibbering Outer Gods, Dream-Quest is more of an adventure story than a horror story. It’s one of his later stories, and it incorporates a lot of the monsters he created in earlier works.
