![]() ![]() Etiquette and Espionage had neither, I’m afraid. In Parasol Protectorate, Carriger’s trademark sense of humor was what made the series stand out, but there was also some substance underneath, and the plots kept me engaged and interested. It took me a while to put my thoughts in order and figure out exactly what went wrong, at least for me, and even now I can only explain a part of it. However, I don’t think Etiquette and Espionage was up to her usual standards, and it makes me very sad that I didn’t enjoy it as much as I’d hoped I would. ![]() The Parasol Protectorate series is a favorite of mine, despite losing some steam in the later installments. 2.5 stars, rounded up because I'm feeling particularly generous today.īefore any of you start plotting my painful and untimely death, I should point out that I’m a big fan of Ms. ![]()

![]() ![]() A subtle collection that sometimes teaches but never preaches. There is still almost audible excitement in her literary voice, but her nature mysticism seems to have reached a stage more of stillness-a quiet that is not so much a quality as a presence that informs most of her images. "A ‘nature' poet in the league of Wordsworth, whose poetry is said to have inspired this volume. Inspired by the familiar lines from William Wordsworth, "To me the meanest flower that blows can give / Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears," she uncovers the evidence presented to us daily by nature, in rivers and stones, willows and field corn, the mockingbird's "embellishments," or the last hours of darkness. Never afraid to shed the pretense of academic poetry, never shy of letting the power of an image lie in unadorned language, Mary Oliver offers us poems of arresting beauty that reflect on the power of love and the great gifts of the natural world. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The modernist sacral perspective of the literary work by Olha Kobylianska makes it possible not only to observe the presence of hidden signs of the New Testament parable, but also to interpret the possibility of a genre shift. ![]() hotar” has many obvious parallels with the Christ’s parable, down to the coincidences in the image of a merciless priest. They were good but not as enjoyable as his other work. Look, considering the amount of money made from stories aimed at the YA market set in a distopian future, preferably with a female protagonist caught in a love triangle, I can’t blame him. His next two books, however, were aimed at young adults. I followed that book with the short story collection Pump Six and Other Stories that I enjoyed as well, especially since many of the stories occur in the Windup Girl universe. They are wound by huge animals called meglodonts that walk on treadmills to generate power. For example, vehicles run on springs, special nanotechnology springs that can store a tremendous amount of energy.
